Lady Gaga Posts Underwear Photos And ‘Confession’ To Make Fans Feel Better About Their Bodies

Lady Gaga is an easy figure to mock. The high falutin’ way she talks about pop music, her constant sartorial cries for attention, and the way she generally behaves like an overgrown theater kid are all fertile ground for some friendly hole-poking. But one thing about her that I will never make fun of is her well-documented struggles with weight and body image, so when a bunch of blogs ran photos of “Fat Lady Gaga” recently, I sat out that particular news cycle in disgust.

Now, Gaga has hit back at all the nasty fat-shamers by making a new section of her website called “Body Revolution” wherein fans are invited to post photos of themselves and talk about their own struggles and triumphs with their physical self-image. Gaga started things off with a series of photos of herself in some cute yellow underwear and some inspiring words:

On the one hand, it’s easy to be cynical about anything Lady Gaga does to overshare and/or draw attention to herself for being OMG SO REAL and EMPOWERED and ANTI-BULLY and stuff. (Plus, she looks good in the pictures! According to normative standards of beauty, even.)

On the other hand, it seems like this might have the power to genuinely help Gaga’s young fans, who are already posting comments like this one:

I can’t stop crying. Gaga i’m battling the same thing right now; you met me in Sydnney the first thing you said to me was ” Oh my God you’re so skinny” And from then on i’ve been trying to recover so much but it’s been killing me, i’ve been relapsing a lot lately and all i do iscry about my body and i feel like i wish i never did recover but this. looking at this is making me strong. You inspire me. If you can be strong, i can too. Thankyou for helping me. Thankyou for everything.

You’d have to be a pretty bad person to shit on something that’s helping kids through their hellish adolescent years, even if Gaga is aggrandizing herself in the process, so I have to give her props. Not that she needs my validation, or anything.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. As a performer she is selling an image. She in particular sells the sexualized, taboo-breaking image (much like Madonna). It is weird, but many people were willing to go with it because the music was ok and she was fairly sexy. With the weight gain, she is simply starting to look fat, and fat and weird doesn’t sell. Call me insensitive if you want to, by I’m being realistic from a purely marketing point of view. If the weight gain becomes permanent, I strongly suspect that her appeal will diminish. Since much of her appeal comes from her image and performance (not her voice, which is not particularly distinctive), the change will affect sales negatively.

Not sure I agree with you. What about Beth Ditto from Gossip? Besides, Gaga’s already built enough momentum that i’m sure a tiny weight gain won’t be a death knell to her career. and btw, that “fat” girl still looks like maybe a 6 at most. Since when is that fat? I’m not a super Gaga supporter or anything, just felt your response was actually incorrect from a marketing perspective. She appeals to the underdog, the nerdy kids, the bullied kids. This actually allows her to market herself more as an “outsider” or “rebel”. Just thought i’d weigh in, since music marketing is what I actually do for a living.

Yeah, I think this slots in really well with her marketing herself as a bullied weirdo/outsider/underdog. If anything, I wondered how she was so good at it before when she was skinny. And real talk, she has never been a heterosexual sex symbol. (As my recent survey highlighted.)

Opinions of course, but seeing the online chatter, it seems fans are starting to look the other way (and by that I mean the buying public in general, not just angst ridden teens). As for Beth Ditto, she is a poor example. she was fat to begin with (and has gotten bigger), and has never appologized for it. in addition her image has never been about selling her sexuality (even though she has had opinions about it and did that magazine cover in the nude). Her image is more about shock than anything else, so her weight gain doesn’t really factor into the equation as much. Gaga’s inmage is strongly associated with sexuality and her looks sell that point. If she continues to rely on that for her performances and her public image, then the expectation will be that as a professional she put forth a solid product to sell it. The weight gain, if permanent, will make it difficult to sell that image and might very well drive fans away. Of course, things could change if she pulls a Madonna and does a reinvention of herself (maybe form the oversexualized, no clothes shows, to outfits that flatter er figure but don’t reveal the weight. As I see it she is selling a product and asking people to accept her might get her some press, but I’m not sure that it is a solid long term strategy for what she is selling.

Gaga’s target audience isn’t straight men. Her looks and sexuality aren’t created for mass appeal. Most heterosexual males don’t seem to get her appeal at all, let along see her as a sex symbol (Jamie’s survey, what up!). And as for her fans looking the other way…Gaga just made millions with the debut of a fragrance. This month. She’s solidifying herself as a brand, and it appears to be working. And the commercial is, well, in my opinion kind of terrifying haha but the point is, it’s not sexy. it’s weird and subversive and THAT is her angle. Not pure sex appeal. and she’s sure as hell not sex baiting heterosexual men. so she’s got a little wiggle room in terms of beauty standards exactly because of the way she is marketed. And when I referred Beth Ditto, she actually is a good example. Of a woman who doesn’t fit the “ideal” beauty standard and doesn’t target that audience anyway. Aside from her obvious successes, Beth Ditto has even been embraced by the beauty industry a tiny bit, with her frequent invitations to sit front row at fashion shows and more importantly, her partnership with MAC makeup. not too shabby for her.
