I take back every not-so-nice thing I’ve said about Taylor Swift. Turns out she’s on our side! In fact she might be the king of our side because she can out-troll us any day of the week with her songs.
I have to troll people comment by painstaking comment. But she can put out one song and suddenly everyone’s talking about her. Whether they’re complimenting her or commending her or condoning her, she’s getting them talking. And isn’t that what a troll does? Creates conversation among an otherwise “whatever” topic.
And you know how she keeps everyone talking about her when she’s not releasing a song about an ex-boyfriend? She dates a high school student. It’s brilliant. Absolutely genius. All this time I’ve written her off as pr-machine-disguised-in-the-body-of-a-Pleasantville-extra. Au contraire.
She’s an Internet troll. One of the best I’ve ever seen. Need proof? Look at this latest interview with Good Morning America about her upcoming song, “Begin Again” on the highly anticipated album “Red.”
“It’s actually a song about when you’ve gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and go on that first date after a horrible break-up, and the vulnerability that goes along with all of that.”
We all know what will happen next. The internet will explode with speculation about which one of her famous ex-boyfriends she’s referring to in the song.
John Mayer? Jake Gyllenhaal? Taylor Lautner? Joe Jonas?
She’ll never answer of course, because trolls don’t calm chaos — they create it. So all I really have to say is well done Taylor Swift. I’m so happy to invite you over to the dark side.
