Well, that was a fairly boring Emmy Awards. Host Jimmy Kimmel started out strong in the opening bit, but many of his later jokes lacked punchlines. Like, we’re not sure if we’d trust him to do any more pranks after his joke with Tracy Morgan completely underwhelmed us. At least Amy Poehler was on hand to show Jimmy what a real awards show prank looks like.
As for who went home with the golden statue? Well, a handful of series swept the major awards, which is good news for everyone who’s been telling their friends to watch Showtime’s thriller Homeland! But by the same token, it got eye-rollingly exhausting when the Modern Family crew went up for award after award. Did anyone else find it uncomfortable that ABC broadcast the Emmys and won a bunch of awards? It just felt weird.
Now, a couple of actors looked genuinely surprised to win, like Aaron Paul (actually humble, and classily calling out fellow nominee and co-star Giancarlo Esposito), Jon Cryer (because he knew he was up against stiff competition), and Louis C.K. (because it’s him). Those were the sweet little surprises of the night, but they were often overshadowed by utter fails like Benedict Cumberbatch losing out to Kevin Costner. Seriously, what was going on there? That said, we’re super excited for the cast and crew of Game Change! Good on all of them.
Here’s the whole list of winners so you can continue to “aww” and rage over the results of what still turned out to be a pretty lukewarm show.
