I still remember watching the first episode of Firefly – “The Train Job,” because Fox fucked things up instead of showing us the pilot — exactly ten years ago and being kinda underwhelmed. Then sticking around for a few weeks and slowly warming to this show, especially with “Our Mrs. Reynolds,” “Jaynestown,” and “Ariel.” (I didn’t see “Out of Gas” til a while later, but of course that became a favorite too.) And from one week to the next, I was utterly hooked by Joss Whedon‘s quirky, sardonic, tender, funny as hell space western.
And then, one December night when I came home from an eighth-grade dance (having TiVoed the final episode to air, “Objects in Space”), I found out through some Yahoo! news group that Fox had cancelled the show. Utter despair… then rallying from the fandom… then the show came back! As a movie, Serenity, in 2005. Sitting in the movie theater on opening weekend was one of the proudest moments of my young life.
This show was truly ahead of its time. Consider Whedon’s record-breaking success with The Avengers now! People are finally realizing how incredible he truly is, when we Browncoats have known for a decade. One aspect of timing that has me sad, however, is that because Firefly went off the air ten years ago, it kinda missed the whole Tumblr craze. To that end, there aren’t nearly enough .gifs of this series. However, I spent a long time on Tumblr today rounding up some of the show’s best moments. Really, you’d have to .gif almost every frame, every line of dialogue, to collect all of our favorite memories. But this is a start.

And for good measure, here’s the legendary gag reel. Don’t miss the amazing funeral sequence that displays perhaps Nathan Fillion‘s best comedic timing!
Also, from Serenity:
WE HAVE DONE THE IMPOSSIBLE, AND THAT MAKES US MIGHTY
