The Beautiful Creatures Trailer Is For Everyone Who’s Tired Of The Human Girl/Supernatural Guy Dynamic In Movies

A few months ago, we told you about Beautiful Creatures, the witchy YA series that’s being adapted into a movie. Now the first trailer is out—and it’s already way more impressive than anything we’ve seen from the Twilight camp. Not only does it set up the battle between Light vs. Dark over teen Caster Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert), but you really get a sense for how spooky and ethereal the setting is. And of course, the love story between Lena and her human protector Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich).

Watching the trailer, you will be struck by thematic similarities to Twilight—that is, one character saying things like “You don’t know who I really am inside” and the other retorting, “You want to be like a normal human? You don’t even know what that is.” But whereas it’s usually the tortured vampire guy talking to the helpless human girl who’s fallen head over heels for him, in this case it’s reversed. Lena is the one with the power, and Ethan is trying to drag her away from her magical destiny.

I’m really excited to see this new dynamic where, though the guy is still the archetypal protector, he’s completely in over his head. Consider everyone else who wants a piece of Lena: Her reclusive uncle Macon Ravenwood (Jeremy Irons); her cousin Ridley Duchannes (Emmy Rossum), who along with her mom are trying to turn her Dark; Lena’s ally Amma (Viola Davis); and Mrs. Lincoln (Emma Thompson), the town busybody who looks like she’s gonna start an actual witch hunt.

I haven’t read the books, but I’m fairly impressed by what I’ve seen so far. And if you’re wondering what the music from the trailer is, it’s “Seven Devils” by Florence + the Machine. Who else could bring that lovely, haunting lilt at the end?

I read the book. It was not bad but definitely not good enough to be made into a movie. The guy playing Ethan looks much too old for the part. These are supposed to be kids that are in high school. If I am not mistaken, they are only 16 years old in the book. The guy in the movie trailer looks about 23 years old or so.
