Peter Jackson and his merry crew are back at it with this new trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey! This prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy stars Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman as hobbit Bilbo Baggins, who gets tricked into joining a band of dwarves, trolls, and elves to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasure from the dragon Smaug. And who makes poor Bilbo join the expedition? Why, Gandalf, played delightfully yet again by Sir Ian McKellen.
If you’re a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s books, then you’ll be excited to see the world of The Hobbit laid out here. I saw each Lord of the Rings film exactly once, and they weren’t the directors’ cuts. I’m on the fence about actually seeing this movie—not because it doesn’t look like a soaring, adventurous fantasy film! But simply because I’ve always found those movies a lot to swallow. However, the presence of plenty of celebrated actors could be enough to sway me. Although you don’t see them in the trailer, Orlando Bloom reprises his role as elf Legolas; Lee Pace and Luke Evans are among the new blood in the movie; and you get to see just a hint of Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug in this movie. (You’ll have to wait til the second film The Hobbit: There and Back Again to squee over the Sherlock reunion of Freeman and Cumberbatch facing off on-screen.)
You know what is in the trailer? Giant bunnies. That’s pretty badass. Oh, and Gollum, creepier than ever — I swear, those CGI eyes are even realer-looking — and ready to defend his Precious from Bilbo. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes out December 14, 2012.
