Part of what’s so surprising about the Kate Middleton topless photos scandal is how supportive Buckingham Palace has been about the whole thing. And now Kate has yet another royal in her corner: Duchess Sarah Ferguson has made sure to let everyone know that she can sympathize with Kate’s embarrassment, because she’s been there too.
Fergie told The Daily Mail, “I have total empathy and sympathy for her. I have been there and know what it’s like. Everyone is entitled to privacy. It is a devastating invasion of one’s personal inner space. It is deplorable, abhorrent and despicable. She is a beautiful young woman doing a great job for the country. Why should she be stripped of that moment with her husband?”
The thing is, this all just smells like opportunism. The Duchess of York did indeed get photographed topless back in 1992, but the circumstances were quite different: Whereas Kate and Prince William were enjoying a romantic getaway post-wedding, Fergie was caught canoodling with an American businessman. Sure, she was already separated from her husband Prince Andrew, but you can see her ridicule came for a whole different reason.
Furthermore, the ensuing decades saw Fergie criticized for her lavish lifestyle post-divorce; then came the debt problems; and in 2010 she was caught on-camera telling an undercover reporter that for £500,000 she could get him access to Prince Andrew. Whoops! Fergie fell from grace a long time ago, and now she’s just trying to stay relevant and appear sympathetic by pretending to throw her support behind Kate.
Here’s Fergie with Princess Beatrice, who I just learned is her daughter. I wonder if she had a hand in Beatrice’s meme-making fascinator at last year’s Royal Wedding…
