Early this morning, TMZ published a scandalous photo of Teen Mom‘s one well-adjusted star Catelynn Lowell… are you ready… taking a hit from a bong. OH SHIT. There go all of our hopes for Catelynn down the drain. She should be ashamed of herself—she had everything going for her, and now she’s ruined her life in one inhale.
…I’m sorry, did we time travel back to a ’90s D.A.R.E. class? In the past twelve hours since the photo went online, there’s been nothing but judgment and condemnation, with sites deriding Catelynn for disappointing them and letting them down. TMZ made their opinion clear by writing, “Catelynn could’ve been the one Teen Mom star who ever appeared responsible and smart. Past tense.”
Is it me, or is that a really harsh reaction? According to TMZ, the photo is from a party one of Catelynn’s friends threw in Michigan last month. OK, so she was cutting loose with some friends; it’s not like she was smoking weed while behind the wheel of a deadly vehicle. While her manager would not “confirm the validity” of the photo, he did release this statement:
“Like many other young adults, Catelynn, at times, struggles with making the best decisions for her health and career. As her manager, I have strongly advised her to exercise good judgment at all times. She must learn from her mistakes. This will serve as a teachable moment in her development as a young woman.”
This is true. But unlike many young adults, Catelynn has suffered through the incredibly difficult decision of giving up a child for adoption, and watching her mother April Lowell and stepfather Butch Baltierra abuse each other and wind up in jail. And it’s all been televised for the last few years for our enjoyment. In contrast to other twenty-year-olds, Catelynn has had to consider adopting her little brother Nick just to keep him away from April. Who, by the way, called up a tabloid pretending to be her daughter to try and sell a story about Catelynn being pregnant again. (Which, for the twenty-four hours we believed it, brought on another round of “how dare she” guilt-tripping.) Can you really blame her for looking for a little escapism?
Of course, April and Butch are where I can see the argument of being disappointed in Catelynn for toking up. As the child of addicts, she’s likely more susceptible to drugs, and she’s witnessed firsthand the horrors of addiction. The absolute smartest thing she could do is not touch the stuff at all. And judging from this photo, this wasn’t her first time at the rodeo.
The Stir makes several key points in why they’re disappointed in Catelynn, from the aforementioned parents issue to the fact that Catelynn has put herself out there as a role model. (Ironically, the most recent tweet on her Twitter profile is retweeting a follower who wrote, “What an inspiration you are!!” about Catelynn speaking out against texting while driving.) Of course, it could be that this scandalous photo makes her even more relatable to troubled young women—not only has she given up a baby for adoption, but she also smokes weed every now and then.
The biggest worry that The Stir pointed out is how Catelynn’s fiance Tyler Baltierra will respond. Seeing as Butch is his father, who told his son that he loves cocaine more than him, you’d imagine Tyler is pretty anti-drugs. Judging from his most recent tweet, however, it seems like Tyler is going the denial route, or at least believing Catelynn’s word above TMZ’s:
“@WilII_Smith: Haters will broadcast your failure, but whisper your success.”Jealousy can be a motivating emotion, Haters should embrace it!
Hopefully this was nothing more than recreational use, and Catelynn will either kick the habit or make sure there are no camera phones around at future parties.
