Nina Dobrev Explains Why They Cut Her Abortion Scene From The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

Nina Dobrev The Perks of Being a Wallflower abortion scene cut R rating Candace CharlieThe upcoming teen film The Perks of Being a Wallflower is chock full of young Hollywood heavyweights like Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, and Logan Lerman, but one character we haven’t heard a lot about is the protagonist Charlie’s sister Candace, played by The Vampire DiariesNina Dobrev. While she’s a supporting character, her accidental pregnancy and abortion is one of the book’s grittier subplots. Teen.com sat down with Nina at the Toronto International Film Festival and got her to spill on her role in the movie. For those of you wondering how much the movie sticks to the book—it turns out they did shoot the abortion scene, but ultimately the filmmakers decided to cut it.

“We shot the clinic scene and a few scenes post-clinic, but unfortunately the movie was rated R, and it got a little too heavy,” Nina explained. “So we had to take them out, so that the viewers who the movie is intended for could watch it.” Of filming the scene, she said, “It was definitely a little crazy, but, you know, it’s what a lot of people go through. It was a big part of the book; Candace and Charlie drifted apart for a little while, and tragedy is what brings people together.”

That’s a little disappointing, since Stephen Chbosky‘s book is known for its no-punches-pulled approach to drugs, sexuality, and abortion. Plus, we’ve seen Nina play the other end of that situation — that is, a teen mom — on Degrassi: The Next Generation, so we would’ve liked to see how she grappled with this, especially if the scenes were as dark as she said they were. However, there’s good news: Nina says the scenes will most likely be on the DVD.

Check out the rest of Teen.com’s interview, including Nina saying a few words in Russian and answering whether she would ever get tattoos:
