Look how happy Josh Hutcherson is to see you! The Hunger Games: Catching Fire kicked off filming in Atlanta, Georgia, this week—and judging from these photos, everyone has jumped right into character. We’re looking at freshly-dyed hair (or in one actor’s case, an awesome wig), spandex duds that I can only guess are swanky Capitol training outfits, and lots of excited grins all around.
Almost everyone is here. It looks like Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth are still catching up, though his scenes are obviously not part of the Capitol training sequence that seems to be going on here. Obviously you know who’s playing whom, but it’s been weeks and weeks since the first casting announcement, so let’s re-meet the cast and make our first costuming and plot guesses. Like Josh’s necklace above—could it be Peeta Mellark‘s tribute token? According to the Hunger Games fan wiki, Peeta brings with him a mockingjay medallion that’s a secret locket with photos of Gale, Katniss’ mom and Prim. This doesn’t quite match up, but the filmmakers have taken liberty with Katniss’ mockingjay pin before.
Alan Ritchson is looking nice and buff as pretty boy victor Gloss. You’ll notice that a lot of the actors have assistants holding umbrellas over them, presumably to make sure they don’t get sunburned in the early-fall heat. I thought it was cute that Alan decided to carry his own umbrella for at least some of the time.

And here’s Alan’s on-screen sister Stephanie Leigh Schlund! Most likely she won’t be mugging for the camera as Cashmere, but it’s cool to see the cast already feeling comfortable on-set.
Jena Malone is probably appreciating her brief time in a fluffy robe, since she’ll be spending a lot of her on-screen time naked or pretty close to it. I’m no hair expert, so I can’t tell if her Johanna Mason hair is a wig, or if she cut it for the role.

And here’s our Finnick Odair! As you can see, the dark-haired Sam Claflin has gone bronze, and I gotta say, it’s a pretty good look for him. You’ll also see that he’s sporting the same uniform as many of his co-stars: Spandex pants with gold stripes, and sneakers. Of course, no shirt for him because mmm.

More Finnick, with a closer look at the training outfit!

Could he be carrying Finnick’s trident?! …Most likely not, but a girl can dream.

Yay, it’s Willow Shields back as Prim! Which means we’ll be seeing set pics from both the Capitol and District 12 in the coming weeks.
Jeffrey Wright is boning up on the source material, reading Mockingjay when not filming his scenes as Beetee.

And here’s Amanda Plummer as Beetee’s close ally Wiress. I’m excited to see these two play socially awkward and just a smidge crazy. (Also, it totally makes sense that Lionsgate cast two celebrated theater actors for this duo.)

Whoa, Lynn Cohen is nearly unrecognizable as Mags! But I’m glad they gave her long hair; it kinda makes me think of older Rose from Titanic. (Except, you know, less of a smug bitch.)

It looks like Meta Golding hasn’t yet been fitted for her scary Enobaria grill, those teeth filed to a sharp point and then capped in gold. But there’s time.
Bruno Gunn is working on his Brutus persona by doing a “come at me, bro!” on the set. Yet again I’m worried for Josh Hutcherson having to go toe-to-toe with this giant. Except…

Dayum, Peeta got ripped.
