When you think of “pretty, well-adjusted girls who can scare the shit out of us” in young Hollywood, it’s a shortlist: Chloe Moretz and Isabelle Fuhrman. Chloe we first met as the foulmouthed, violent thirteen-year-old in Kick Ass; she went on to play a vicious vampire in Let Me In and made us think twice about trusting cute little bloodsuckers. Then there’s Isabelle, whose career start was a mirror-image: She was the scary kid in Orphan – the horror movie with a truly great twist — and then played gleefully murderous tribute Clove in The Hunger Games.
I was worried that because Clove gets killed in the Arena and obviously doesn’t return for Catching Fire, Isabelle’s career might stagnate. But it turns out that not only is she shooting the sci-fi action movie After Earth with Jaden Smith, but she’s also just nabbed Chloe Moretz’s starring role in The Wilderness of James. Deadline reports that Chloe had to drop out of the indie coming-of-age tale, ironically because she’s dealing with secret identities and bullying in Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall.
The Wilderness of James is about a young boy dealing with the absence of his father. Ironically, this movie would’ve reunited Chloe with her Let Me In co-star Kodi Smit-McPhee; now, Isabelle will play the Val to his James.
Neither Isabelle nor Chloe has commented on the casting change via Twitter, mostly ’cause this kind of thing happens often. Really, I would love to learn that they’re actually best buds and gleefully support each other on projects like this. Right now it seems like they’re in the same circles but haven’t met outside of events. Fingers crossed…!
