People Of McIntyre, GA Not Entirely Pleased With Local Export Here Comes Honey Boo Boo

When I first saw TLC’s cinema vérité masterpiece Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, I was instantly charmed by Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson‘s family’s sparkling wit, as well as their good social graces and impeccable table manners. But not everyone from their small county in rural Georgia agrees. According to The Hollywood Reporter, local reactions to the reality show (and the attention it’s brought the town of McIntyre, GA) have been mixed at best.

“You can’t very well ask and expect a television network to possess tact and taste – unless it makes them a dollar,” said Wilkinson County Chamber of Commerce president Jonathan Jackson, adding that he dislikes how the show’s set-up shots focus on rundown images like rusted cars and stray animals. (40% of families in the town live below the poverty level, dude.) OH SNAP. He’s lucky Alana’s not around to roll her neck at him.

Another McIntyre resident said:

“I don’t mind it, it’s just that it doesn’t give a good image for the county since it is a small county, and it’s a really family-oriented county, and we are basically, you know, church goers down here, and a lot of the things they do … we don’t agree with it.”

Could she be referring to their harboring of a homosexual pig in their home?

But the news is not all bad: multiple reports confirm that the family is pretty much like they are on the show, which confirms my theory that this might be the “realest” reality show ever produced. And for her part, “Mama” June Shannon is characteristically zen about the whole thing:

“It’s small town living. I don’t have any trouble with anybody here or whatever, but people are going to have opinions. I mean, that’s everyday life.”

Another interesting tidbit from the story is that the family isn’t spending the money they make from the show, instead putting it into four separate trusts for June Shannon’s four kids. I can’t wait to see what kind of Beverly Hillbillies type spinoff results when the girls gain access to their trust funds.
