I know that you’re dying to know which Arrested Development bit players have been welcomed back for the upcoming new season and subsequent movie, so I won’t keep you waiting any longer: Mae Whitman did indeed confirm that her bizarre, bland character Ann Veal will appear in the revived series, in a cameo if nothing else.
Dedicated fans will remember that Ann is George Michael’s (Michael Cera) equally awkward girlfriend, a quiet little creature so unassuming that she often blends into the background or gets left behind. Really, though, it’s just Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) who can’t seem to remember Ann’s name, leading to such great quotes as “It’s as clear as the Ann on Plain’s face” and “I’m sure Egg is a great person.” Ann was the kind of character who demonstrated the show’s knack for deadpan, low-key running jokes that pay off every time you see them.
So, what can we expect? Mae told Hollywood.com,
“I’ve always been like ‘Oh I don’t want to give anything away,’ but I definitely, definitelywouldn’t ever let this chance go by without being a part of it. I told Mitch [Hurwitz] that I would stand outside the sound stage until he would let me just walk through the background or something.
“I would say yes, you can definitely expect to find a little bit of Ann hiding in the background somewhere, at least.”
Of course, we can’t forget that Ann actually had a big reversal in the series finale, where it was revealed that she had secretly been dating George Michael’s uncle Gob (Will Arnett). It’s unclear how long after the finale the new season will pick up, but as long as we get to see Michael forgetting Ann on a bench in Mexico again, I’m excited.
Does that mean we might also get to see Alan Tudyk reprise his role as Ann’s pastor father?
