We noticed something interesting when watching the latest trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 on ClevverTV: While it’s mostly the same footage of the Cullens banding together with other international vampire covens against the Volturi, new trailers are now really playing up the angle of Kristen Stewart as a mother. Probably because everyone thinks she’s heartless for cheating on Robert Pattinson—I’m not surprised that Summit and the producers are pushing out a more sympathetic Kristen.
In case you haven’t been keeping up with the series, here’s where we’re at when Breaking Dawn, Part 2 hits theaters on November 16th: Bella Swan has fulfilled her dream of becoming an agile, superstrong vampire and joining the Cullen family along with her newborn baby Renesmee. Except, because “Nessie” (Mackenzie Foy) is a human/vampire hybrid, she grows at an alarming rate and in just a few months already looks and acts like a little kid. And because Nessie is basically a Mary Sue, everyone just can’t get enough of her. Including her new parents who got to skip past the “no sleep” stage — albeit after Renesmee almost killed Bella trying to get out of her stomach — and spend the whole trailer gazing adoringly at their offspring.
Warning: This is a lot of emotional weight for Kristen to take after years of just giving the same facial expression. So look at these screenshots at your own risk, because the soft smiles and fierce mama bear glares might shock you.
When she’s not tackling mountain lions in mid-air, Bella keeps her (newly red) eyes on her daughter.
This is what Bella looks like even before they find out that the Volturi want to burn Renesmee alive—so overcome with emotion that she gets to have sex and drink blood and stay young forever with Edward, but also ready to take on all the haters. (Perhaps Kristen was already looking ahead to the people who would deride her for cheating on Rob with Rupert Sanders?)
Before that great .gif of Edward using Bella as a weapon came out, this was my favorite part of every Breaking Dawn trailer. When Alice informs the rest of the Cullens that the Volturi think Renesmee is an immortal child — that is, a kid who got turned into a vampire instead of some vamp/human hybrid — Bella splutters, “She was born, not bitten! She grows every single day!” After years of Kristen playing Bella so deadpan, this outburst of emotion mostly prompts laughter.
Kristen seems to have decided that the way to most accurately communicate that human emotion of love is by clasping her on-screen daughter’s hand to her face and staring longingly into her eyes. You know, basically what Bella did with Edward, minus the sexual tension. Here’s the top photo from another angle, via E! Online:
Similarly, you have Bella tenderly telling little Nessie, “I’ll never let anybody hurt you.” I imagine that Kristen channeled her most famous on-screen mother, Jodie Foster circa Panic Room, for this interlude.
Then we come to the final battle, which of course takes place in the snow. Here’s one more screenshot, this time in .gif form to give you a better sense of the united “BITCH PLEASE” faces on these three:
