Listen, I am an entertainment news blogger. I like when dramatic things happen in the celebrity world, because it gives me stuff to write about. That said, even I am tired of the coverage of the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal. After the first couple days of genuine news being reported, there was no new information, so the endless speculation began. Would Robert Pattinson forgive her? Is it all a publicity stunt to increase anticipation for Twilight? Or Rupert Sanders‘ career? Or his wife Liberty Ross‘s career? Is K-Stew now sleeping with Giovanni Agnelli? Are they both secretly gay? Or vampires? Or gay vampires?
With a few exceptions (gay vampires) I’ve actually written about a good number of those theories, so I can’t deny that it’s good fodder for the ol’ rumor mill, but enough is enough, right? At some point we have to admit that we don’t know anything about these peoples’ lives, and go back to reporting actual (ish) facts, don’t we? DON’T WE?
Nope! Not according to 20/20, which aired a special last night about cheaters caught on film, which was called ‘The Camera Never Lies’. It featured a bunch of celebrity couples who broke up because of a public scandal, including Jude Law and Sienna Miller, Anderson Cooper, LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian, and, of course, Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Because we just can’t seem to get enough of them.
Now, aside from the fact that the R-Patz / K-Stew story has already had the living shit reported out of it, let’s just note for a moment the inherent problems with the name of the special: ‘The Camera Never Lies’. Sure, that applies really well to celebrities who get caught on tape being unfaithful the their spouses or significant others — your partner can lie, but the camera can’t! Every picture that you ever see is completely faithful to life. There’s no such thing as Photoshop or PR stunts or even staged photoshoots. Every actress requests that none of the cellulite on her legs be edited out of pictures, and we can be absolutely and completely positive that Kristen Stewart did knowingly cheat on Robert Pattinson with Rupert Sanders in full view of the paparazzi in front of a tourist destination.
I’m not saying that photos don’t tell their own truths. If you’re a non-famous person and you think your spouse is cheating on you, by all means hire a private detective and document their every move. The photos that you get out of that could tell any number of stories, just like the photos of Kristen and Rupert tell the story of them being together. Whether they were or weren’t is anybody’s guess, and everybody — literally everybody — is guessing.
