The Daily WTF: Pussy Riot Supporters Blamed For Gruesome Murder In Russia

The Kremlin’s supporters are pointing fingers at supporters of jailed feminist musical collective Pussy Riot after the phrase “Free Pussy Riot” was found scrawled on the wall at a murder scene. Oh dear.

According to The New York Daily News, a 76-year-old mother and her 38-year-old daughter were found murdered in their apartment in the Russian city of Kazan, and “FREE! PUSSY RIOT” was written on the wall in English, and in what appeared to be blood. While police are not yet saying anything for sure, pro-Putin forces are jumping on this as a chance to paint Pussy Riot’s supporters as murderers and extremists.

For his part, the band’s lawyer Nikolai Polozov was quick to disavow any involvement on the part of the group. “I am sorry that some freaks are using Pussy Riot’s band name,” he told the Interfax news agency, and took to Twitter to call the incident “either a horrendous provocation or a psychopathic” case.

While it’s entirely possible that the murderer used the Pussy Riot name to distract police from his or her true identity (as the police have suggested), it’s also possible that this is an attempt on the part of the Russian government to discredit the growing movement, which has been causing trouble for President Putin around the world. I also find it somewhat suspicious how quickly journalists were allowed in to photograph the crime scene, but I’m hardly an expert in political scheming. Either way, it’s a horrific act made more horrific by the way the group’s enemies are rushing to use it against them.
