Ellen Page Takes Lesbian Role Despite Lesbian Rumors

Ellen Page has long been the subject of speculation about her sexual orientation. She’s never really been linked to a dude, and she just has that vibe about her. (Doesn’t she?) It seems like a bold move, then, for her to take on a lesbian character in the drama Freeheld, a film which will dramatize the battle for legal rights on the part of LGBT partners.

Based on an Oscar winning documentary short, the film will tell the true story of Stacie Andree, who engaged in a landmark legal battle for pension rights when her partner, Laurel Hester (a New Jersey police detective) became terminally ill. It sounds like it has to potential to be a great film that will further humanize the struggle for gay rights in this country, as well as a more mature role for Ellen, whose adorable baby face has impeded her ability to be seen as anything other than “the girl from Juno” to at least some degree.

This is an especially bold move, considering the rumors that have been circulating about her; while most closeted or rumored-to-be-closeted actors stick to playing straight people (‘sup, Tom Cruise?), Ellen seems less afraid to go there. It’s not even the first time she’s played a lesbian; one sketch in her SNL appearance, for example, felt more like a coming out sketch than anything.

It’s entirely possible that while guarded about her personal life when doing publicity, Ellen Page just isn’t that deep in the closet. I kind of get the feeling that if you met her at a party and you hit it off and got to talking about love, life, etc., she’d tell you the truth. Then again, it’s possible that I’m totally wrong and she’s being impaled upon A-Skars‘ nordic spear as we speak. Who knows?

I’m sure the main reason Ellen has chosen to do this film is that it could be very important for gay rights and it’s a great role. Most actresses who play gay are not gay themselves although many are bi (possibly like Ellen).
You’re wrong when you imply she’s never been “linked to a dude”. The following 2 posts from IMDb may change your mind.

Plenty of lesbians had boyfriends when they were younger. Or maybe she’s bisexual. I definitely feel like she’s come into contact with a vagina not her own.

First of all you say that she’s never been “linked to a dude” and when I point out that she has been, you discount it by saying “plenty of lesbians had boyfriends when they were younger” Why would she talk about sleeping with a boyfriend on a recent Leno interview if she’s not into guys? Why are you so detemined to label her as a lesbian? Do you have some secret insight into other people’s sexuality that the rest of us don’t have?
There’s a big difference between being lesbian and being bisexual for a young actress in Hollywood – that’s why people like myself who care about her career post on boards like this.

I thought she was dating a guy? As a lesbian, I think it is disgusting for people, including lesbians themselves, to be so hellbent in pegging somebody as a lesbian just because there is a “vibe” such as the case with Ellen and Kristen Stewart. There are some actresses who play ONE lesbian role and the entertainment and lesbian community peg them to be gay and refuse to relent in trying to pull someone out of a closet that may not exist. It does not help any cause and seems to be almost like bullying.

Call me crazy, but since when is someone’s sex life the public’s business? I suppose if their sexual orientation is at odds with their public proclamations, in such a way that it undermines their promises to the public (I’m thinking Larry Craig here), then it would make some sense. But who cares who a movie star is sleeping with — it’s not like their orientation is determining federal policy! Ellen Page is a great actress, and since that’s her job, that’s all that should matter; in her off hours, she can do what she wants as long as it isn’t illegal and doesn’t hurt anybody. Just like everyone else.
