As television shows go, Mad Men is a pretty massive force in our culture. Its characters are so richly drawn and well acted that it’s definitely going to be hard for anyone from that show to get people to see them as anything else afterwards, or even just as real people currently living in the 21st century. Hence, I don’t blame Elisabeth Moss for trying to distance herself from Peggy Olson by adopting a more modern look. But did she really have to go full Miley?
At a recent red carpet appearance, Moss debuted her dramatic blonde pixie cut to much OMG-ing. It appears from this picture that she had a bit of sideboob action going on, too. As pretty as I think she is, this look just doesn’t seem to work on her. And the timing is unfortunate, to say the least.
I mean, look. Elisabeth Moss is a serious actress who’s been nominated for multiple awards. Miley Cyrus is a former child star who does inappropriate things with Twitter for attention. One of these things is not like the other, nor should it want to be. As unfair as it is, Miley did this to her hair first and got a metric fuckton of attention for it, so there’s no way people aren’t going to think about her when they see Elisabeth. And that’s not good for her personal brand. It’s possible that Elisabeth Moss doesn’t even know who Miley Cyrus is, but that’s what publicists are for.
That said, I do want Elisabeth to continue to get good parts after Mad Men, because she’s a great actress who deserves them. And if distancing herself from Peggy is the way to do it, I’m all for it. I just want her to be careful about accidentally copying Miley in the future, because that’s not going to help matters much. I say these things because I care.
