If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to wake up in the morning with the goal of being an incredible douchebag, you should interview Bret Easton Ellis. Because in the past few weeks, he’s seemed really into alientating almost everyone with his incredibly homophobic statements toward Matt Bomer playing Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey.
Last week, after getting told that he wouldn’t be writing the screenplay for the movie, he said:
“Ok, I’ll say it. Matt Bomer isn’t right for Christian Grey because he’s openly gay. I am NOT discriminating Matt Bomer because of his sexuality. Fifty Shades demands an actor that is genuinely into women. Get it?! I think Matt Bomer is incredibly handsome and a good actor but I think he comes off totally gay in White Collar.”
Naturally people grew upset with this statement for obvious reasons. Not only is it very possible for a gay actor to play a straight character, but Fifty Shades of Grey fans specifically want Matt Bomer to play Christian Grey. Because it’s not 1973 and we understand that actors sometimes play characters different than themselves. In fact, based on 90% of the movies I see, I hope they’re playing characters different than themselves.
So Bret Easton Ellis released another statement via Twitter that I guess he thought made a point — but I thought made him look like a 7th grade girl who’s not ready to admit she got caught trash talking her best friend.
“You know what? I changed my mind: I now think a gay actor HAS GOT to play Christian Grey. It’s IMPERATIVE that someone gay plays him. Let’s destroy the bullsh*t stereotypes of Hollywood studio moviemaking and cast a gay actor as Christian Grey in ’50 Shades of Grey.’ A win. But I still don’t think Matt Bomer should play the role.”
Cool Bret Easton Ellis. Great non-apology for being an asshole. And also, great motivation for me to join the 10,000 Facebook fan groups begging Matt Bomer to take the role of Christian Grey. While I woke up this morning not really caring about who got the role, I’m suddenly determined to make it happen for Matt Bomer. And you will be too after you see these tweets.
Oh and just in case a small part of you still liked Bret Easton Ellis, check out his Twitter feed. Because he also hates Neil Patrick Harris playing a straight guy on How I Met Your Mother. Because, as he claims, that’s part of the joke — that a gay guy would have sex with women. Hardy har har.
As I would say in 7th grade, remind me to laugh.
