I kinda misled you with that title—this photo of course features all four stars of 10 Things I Hate About You. We’re looking at Larisa Oleynik, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Julia Stiles, all amazingly young and carefree while shooting what would become the definitive “Shakespeare in high school” movie to which all other entries in the genre were compared. Sure, the photo is all over Tumblr, but this is my first time seeing it, courtesy of Reddit.
What struck me is how much it reminds me of a twitpic or Instagram shot, yet it was taken in the early days of cell phones and nearly a decade before social media really existed. I can’t tell if this were taken on a phone or one of those old-fashioned cameras, but it’s appropriately awkward. You’ve got the girls smiling while the guys are trying to act all cool, but really they’re just a bunch of teenagers chilling in-between takes.
Is it weird that Larisa and Julia seem to have peaked in the ’90s/early ’00s while the guys became much more famous? Obviously Heath’s legacy is tied up in his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight and his subsequent death, but Joseph is just powering along with his impassioned role in The Dark Knight Rises, his new thriller Premium Rush where he plays a bike messenger, and all those great interviews he does in sharp suits. (Side note that someone mentioned on another subreddit: The Joker and Robin went to high school together, hehe.) But 10 Things was really supposed to be Julia’s breakout role, and while she’s had plenty of work since, lately she’s been out of the spotlight.
But we’ll always remember this pic. Now when you think “twitpics,” it’s more often some attention-grabbing MySpace-angles shot from Kim Kardashian or Miley Cyrus. I wish we could see more of these fun, low-key behind-the-scenes photos!
