Before our eyes, we’re witnessing the formation of a hot new club among Hollywood elite: The Late-Bloomer Actor Who Hates The Kardashians. A few months back, Jon Hamm derided the famous family in an Elle UK interview, wisely identifying that “being a fucking idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you’re rewarded significantly.” Several months before that, James Bond star Daniel Craig actually kicked off this trend with a very specific barb directed at the enterprising Kris Jenner and her profitable brood: “You can’t buy it back—you can’t buy your privacy back. ‘Ooh I want to be alone.’ Fuck you. We’ve been in your living room. We were at your birth.”
How do I know it’s a trend? Because Jeremy Renner just badmouthed the Kardashians in an interview with the Guardian. He’s also been compared to Craig in how he took over the Bourne franchise and rebooted it; and all three didn’t get their big breaks til they’d been toiling in the biz for over a decade. When the interviewer mentions the Kardashians as an example of the pitfalls of fame, Renner rolls his eyes and says,
“Oh, all those ridiculous people with zero talent who spend their lives making sure everyone knows their name. Those stupid, stupid people.”
What’s funny is that earlier in the interview he makes a pretty serious prediction about the motivation behind entering Hollywood:
“I know it’s a cliche but I never wanted to be famous. I don’t believe anybody wants to be famous.”
But then again, you imagine he was talking about making work you’re actually proud of. It’s difficult to envision any of these successful, confident men wasting any time or brain cells over the Kardashians, but it just goes to show how pervasive reality culture has become. Kim and her sisters are fellow entertainers who are sometimes lumped into the same category as these actors. I shudder to say it, but in some ways they’re peers. It’s frustrating to be an average person toiling away at a normal job and see someone undeserving get more accolades than you; imagine when you’re actually putting your soul into your work like these actors. Not to mention, Renner was living without electricity when he was nominated for an Oscar for The Hurt Locker, and the Kardashians have more money than they ever should.
I’m sure that Kim is furiously drafting a response, but I imagine his reaction will look something like the photo to the right. So in the meantime, let’s try and predict who the next member of this exclusive club will be! I’m gonna say… Michael Fassbender!
