The latest batch of Arrested Development set photos have arrived! So far the main players have been Jason Bateman (long-suffering Michael Bluth) and Michael Cera (his hopelessly awkward but earnest son George Michael), probably because they’re shooting the “Michael” episode first. As you’ll remember, Mitch Hurwitz and co. are releasing ten episodes all in one day, with each one focusing on one member of the Bluth clan. They’ll interact with each other a fair amount — as we saw in last week’s photos of Bateman, Portia di Rossi (Lindsay Bluth), and David Cross (Tobias Fünke) – but the movie will be when they all reunite for real.
So, where are Michael and his son at? Judging from these photos, George Michael is an undergrad at UC Irvine… and in some misguided attempt at being cool, he’s nabbed his uncle Gob‘s Segway. (Note the torn “State Evidence” sticker, which makes me think this was forcibly yanked from some police station or government building.) But even though Will Arnett always made Gob look simultaneously powerful and powerless while zooming by on his Segway, George Michael doesn’t seem to have the same power over the ladies.
Yeah, this girl probably isn’t gonna give him her number, not least of all because he was too much of a pussy to go without a helmet. But wait! At the end of the series, he and his cousin Maeby (Alia Shawkat) were technically married and definitely making out. Of course, the series ended in 2006, when their characters were in high school. So even though Maeby’s certainly part of this family reunion movie, it could be that things with her and George Michael are even more awkward than before.
Thankfully, George Michael always has his father Michael to be completely oblivious to his real problems and instead spout off platitudes and useless solutions. He’s probably telling George Michael how to get the best seats in all of his lectures, when what he really wants to know is how to score some Ritalin. Or who can forget Michael’s wonderfully misguided sex talk? “The mere fact that you call making love ‘Pop-pop’ tells me that you’re not ready.”
