It was nearly a year ago that the first set photos of Penn Badgley in the Jeff Buckley biopic Greetings from Tim Buckley appeared online, and we were fairly underwhelmed with what we saw. Mostly, Penn just looked like hungover Dan Humphrey, not the iconic singer who’s described himself as “rootless trailer trash.” We’d mostly written the whole thing off, since there are two other Buckley movies in the works—one starring Reeve Carney, so you can see why we’re a bit more attached. But Penn must have realized the excitement over his film is waning, because he decided to stop by New York City’s Cameo Gallery over the weekend to try his hand at “Lilac Wine.”
Thanks to ONTD for finding this video… especially because it swayed me a little more to the side of Team Penn. I don’t know much about Buckley, but I’d say that Penn has a pretty decent voice. I’ve listened to the video twice, and his soaring rendition is great in parts, even edging on haunting. Acting-wise I’m not sure he has the chops to carry the movie’s necessary pathos of Jeff dealing with the loneliness and abandonment he feels toward his late father. Whenever Penn screws up his face with emotion, I’m just thinking of Dan Humphrey sneering at the Upper East Siders, nothing deeper than that.
Greetings from Tim Buckley is set to come out sometime this year. So, does this video inspire you?
