Miley Cyrus seems to vacillate weirdly between really domestic and not: She got engaged at 19 but says she doesn’t want to get married anytime soon. She’s taken a liking to midriff-baring red-carpet gowns that just make us cringe… but she also recently moved into the house she grew up in. That’s right, Miley pulled a Jim (from The Office, natch) and bought her parents’ house. OK, so she did it last year, but this Marie Claire interview is the first I heard about it.
It’s a weird mental image, isn’t it? Miley and fiance Liam Hemsworth playing house in the place where Billy Ray and Tish coached little Destiny Hope Cyrus to be an apple-cheeked Disney star. My favorite part of the article is the writer describing the house, including “a giant, modern sofa that Cyrus and Hemsworth ‘sleep on all the time’”—because why would you want to do it in your parents’ bed? That shit is for high schoolers. But then later on, Miley laughs about how weird but sweet it is that she and Liam have taken over Billy Ray and Tish’s spots:
“It’s really weird [sleeping] in my parents’ room. Now it’s my room, and Liam is at my dad’s sink and I’m at my mom’s. It’s really strange, but also really cool. The first time I ever met or hung out with Liam was here. When he first moved to America, he didn’t have any family here, so our family became his. This is where all our memories are being made.”
OK, that’s sort of sweet. It’s hard to criticize Miley when you hear her say stuff like that. Because what’s wrong with her having a filthy mouth or being a pothead or taking semi-artful semi-nudes when her peers are the ones in rehab for coke? She’s outrageous, to be sure, but she reins it in. She has, dare I say it, perspective.
Oh, and I lied. Here’s my actual favorite quote from the feature, Miley scolding her bulldog Ziggy:
“She’s a stubborn little bitch, that one. She doesn’t listen to me. She’s in love with Liam. She loves me when he’s gone, but she totally ate my diamonds on purpose. She was pooping them out all morning!”
Yep, we don’t have to worry about Miley becoming too domestic.
