Dear assorted, passionate, sometimes scary Directioners,
It’s been a while since we’ve last talked; mostly it’s Crushable’s Editor-in-Chief Jenni Maier who covers all things One Direction, and I’m happy to back off. But you guys popped up in my article about Miranda Cosgrove a few weeks back, when one of the commenters said that part of the reason Tumblr hates her comes from some kerfluffle involving the 1D boys. So, what gives? Why do you plot to post her name alongside a photo of Michael Jackson, or call her awkward and hideous on Tumblr?
As I can understand it, all of this originated with 1D’s iCarly guest spot earlier this year. You guys had several intense issues with the match-up: The boys’ jokes about alcohol and sex were way too old for iCarly‘s audience; it was selling out; maybe they would move to the States to increase their U.S. fanbase; the episode was only focusing on Harry Styles, Miranda’s possible love interest, over the other boys; what if one of them fell for Miranda in real life?!
Could that be what really set you off, the idea of a showmance between Miranda and Niall Horan? Was it possessiveness or jealousy? I want to understand why you took out your frustration on the one seemingly self-possessed Disney/Nickelodeon kid to not end up in rehab. Do you have uber-high standards for people who are allowed to associate with the boys? Does that mean that you’ll hate this video of her covering “What Makes You Beautiful”?
For the record, she does a decent job.
I’m not the only one who thinks this is a problem! Let me point you toward this great post from a “Cosgrover” on Tumblr asking for peace. She implored you guys to not think of some preconceived, inaccurate jealousy and to instead be mature, for the boys you’re trying to make proud!
So, have I hit all the points? Please write me back in the comments and help me better understand what it is about Miranda that grinds your gears, what makes you defend 1D so passionately and disparage her so much. Or if you feel that you’re a Directioner who happily gets along with Cosgrovers, I’d love to hear your insight, too!
