It turns out it’s not all sunshine and roses to be one-fifth of the phenomenal boy band One Direction! You do a lot for the fans, and in many ways they bite the hand that sings to them: You have to break up blow-ups on Twitter, your girlfriends are mocked and disdained no matter what, and now you could actually go deaf.
This story is from The Daily Mail, so take it with a grain of salt, but the newspaper reports that 1D’s Louis Tomlinson is losing his hearing because of the piercing screams of Directioners at concerts. Seriously. He’s quoted as saying, “I am going slightly deaf in my right ear. It’s tinnitus… something like that.” He added that it’s especially Scousers — folks from Liverpool — whose screams have hampered his hearing.
Because the label can’t risk losing its runaway hit group, all five boys have been ordered to wear special earpieces that will muffle the fans’ screams at concerts going forward. A source said, “They are only young and still developing, so management insist they wear hi-tech earpieces and filters to reduce the volume of the screaming and the music.” It’s like something out of a sci-fi film!
Maybe the next time you’re screaming at a concert and worrying about having a sore throat for a day, you’ll think about the fact that you have a serious weapon. And that’s not the only way that fans can harm their idols. The Daily Mail article includes a photo of Directioners excitedly snapping iPhone pics of Zayn Malik… but how do we know that the incessant flashing of Apple cameras won’t blind the poor boy? NO ONE IS SAFE NOW.
