Just last week, the internet exploded into a frenzy of sparkling whips and chains out of excitement that Emma Watson would be playing Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey. Like Steve Urkel turning into Stefan Urquelle, we grew giddy in anticipation of seeing our favorite wizarding heroine blossom into the type of women who would subject herself to BDSM sex with Christian Grey.
What would she wear, what would she say and most importantly how would Ron Weasley feel about her being taking advantage of by this man who refuses to wear anything that doesn’t fall into 50 shades of grey color scheme.
Naturally, we played it cool at Crushable and only wrote about it extensively, rather than obsessively. And thank heavens for that because the actress just spoke to Entertainment Weekly and told them she would not be taking the role. For several reasons, but mostly because that rumor grew out of the internet, rather than some casting office.
“I haven’t read the book, I haven’t a read a script, nothing,” Watson tells EW. “There are so many movies you become attached to when I’ve literally never even received a phone call. It was the same way with TheGirl With the Dragon Tattoo – I never even saw a script!”
While the producers of the film spoke out last week and confirmed that no one’s been cast yet, we are happy to hear that Emma’s not even interested in the role. Â And why should she be? She has approximately 87 movies coming out in the next year and she’s far too busy to invest her time in a sex romp based on a tale of teenaged vampire romance.
As I’ve said so many times before, they need to cast someone like Kathy Bates in this role if they really want to make it pop on screen. Right now I’m envisioning Kathy Bates as Anastasia and Zac Efron as Christian Grey. But that could just be because I read the book while watching High School Musical and Titanic in a row.
And then had a weird dream about them in a lifeboat together.
