8 Birthday Facts About Project Runway‘s Tim Gunn, Who’s Been ‘Making It Work’ For 59 Years Today

Do you have a favorite kindly older gentleman yet? Because if you don’t, I highly recommend Tim Gunn. It’s his birthday today, and the Project Runway personality has officially been making it work for 59 years. We already know that he’s an excellent mentor, an out and proud gay man, and can rock the shit out of a pinstripe suit, but there’s a lot more to him. Like for example, did you know he’s been single since a relationship ended abruptly in the late 1980s? What are you waiting on, fabulous men of Manhattan? If I were a gay man, I’d be on this guy in a second, just so I could wake up in the morning to the sultry sounds of ‘Carry on’ and ‘Make it work’, his Project Runway catch-phrases. In Tim’s his honor, here are eight birthday facts about this hyper-articulate eligible bachelor:

  1. He was a champion swimmer in high school. Watch your back, Ryan Lochte.
  2. It’s his sister’s birthday today as well! And no, they’re not twins. She’s three years younger. His parents apparently just got especially frisky every year right around…(fast math)…Halloween. Ha! Well I guess we know where he gets his love of costumes!
  3. April 27, 2007 has been designated ‘Timothy M. Gunn Day’ in Palm Desert, California.
  4. …no one knows what the ‘M’ stands for.
  5. His dad was an FBI agent! Instant middle-school street cred.
  6. He has a BFA in Sculpture.
  7. For the ‘It Gets Better’ campaign, he bravely shared that he had struggled with depression as a young man, and at age 17 had attempted suicide by swallowing over 100 pills.
  8. He’s guest-starred as himself on Ugly Betty, How I Met Your Mother, Drop Dead Diva, and Gossip Girl.

I guess he’s actually a pretty mysterious gentleman, if you really think about it, but I bet you if I can guess his middle name, he’ll consent to be my life partner/fashion mentor/kindly male relative. Marvin…or…Matildo? Magician? Michigan? Oh man, I guess I have my work cut out for me.

Your “work” is questionable at best, Tim would not be pleased, since Mr. Gunn has turned 59 today,(try your math a little more slowly) having been born in 1953. In regards to your “If I were a gay man, I’d be on this guy in a second…” comment I’m here to tell you that you are very much late to the ‘Lets Hop On Tim’ party as there is video out there on Youtube somewhere when during a talk show interview he was asked about his charity work where people could bid to have Dinner or Lunch with him and the proceeds would benefit the charity he subscribed to. When he spoke of these dining experiences he was clear to establish with much hearty emphasis – complete with double hand flourish and exaggerated eye roll – that he made sure they ate at places “..with NO TABLECLOTHS..”.
So you think about his statement and then tell me if you can figure out why that may be… … it would seem apparently all the “fabulous men of Manhattan” have already tried what you have in mind sweety.
But regardless, I claim this fabulous and largely ASEXUAL man is mine, as I do indeed know his middle name.
    It’s McKenzie.
    As is his nephew’s.

So how’s that for some “secrets”, eh?

As Tim Gunn would say “Make it work Alexis!…Even if it requires a calculator!”

    {and i know you heard him say that in his voice :)}

I got the UTMOST pleasure to interview Mr. Gunn at Liz Claiborne headquarters in NYC for the “Time to Talk” domestic violence awareness event he holds every year. He is a class act. He’s so genuine, brilliant, beautiful, and philanthropic. I can’t say enough about the good feeling I got from this gentleman. ‘Love you Tim, will never forget our wonderful interview and talk afterward about meeting the Obamas. :) Have a great birthday.

Thanks for sharing, I just knew he would be the same in person!

Not quite sure that 59 years old qualifies as an “older gentleman’ but I guess all is relative. Whatever age Tim may be, he is timeless!

MacKenzie has a long, important history in our family. My maternal grandfather, Dr. Charles Duncan McKenzie died in a rock slide coming home from Leadville, Colorado. My Mother was about two years old at the time. Grandmother never remarried. I have a cousin named Charles McKenzie Va—n, my son is Garrett McKenzie H–e, and my granddaughter is Kathleen MacKenzie R—–s. Long live the MacKenzies and all named for them. Happy Birthday!!!!

I think the “M” is for Magnificent because that is what he is! Timothy Magnificent Gunn!

I just love Tim Gunn! The contestants are so lucky to have him as a mentor for their careers! Heck, I wish I could get a Tim Gunn to guide me through my career at Dish. Decisions would be a lot easier, since I’d follow that man to the end of the world and back! I like that his criticism is not rude or insulting, but educated and enlightening; he makes the perfect mentor in that way! That classy, sophisticated man makes me never want to miss an episode! Unfortunately, that becomes a struggle in my household because boyfriend could definitely live without Project Runway. Some people simply don’t have any taste. LOL! It’s just lucky that we have the Hopper DVR that lets us record or watch six things at once, so I can be with my beloved Tim and he can watch his sports or whatever. I don’t know where this show would be without him!
