Over the past few days, many people have spoken out against the “guilty as charged” bigot who runs Chik-Fil-A, Dan Cathy. Bloggers have denounced him, mayors have urged him not to open up restaurants in their cities, and many are participating in a nationwide boycott. One clever chef has even devised a recipe for a sandwich called the “Chik-Fil-Gay” so people can have their chicken and pickles without contributing to the anti-marriage-equality cause.
It comes as a rather big surprise, then, that famously out-and-proud homosexual Antoine Dodson (of “Bed Intruder” fame) would continue to eat at their restaurants. You can see his take in the Youtube video above, but here’s a pithy excerpt:
“Just let me tell you this: I have uncles and aunties as well that does not approve of gay marriages and stuff like that, but they respect me. I don’t care about one person’s opinion and that’s the way they feel, and that’s fine.
Chik-Fil-A makes good meals… so no one is gonna to stop me from eating there. If I want to have a Chik-Fil-A sandwich, GUESS WHAT? I’m gonna have a Chik-Fil-A sandwich. It doesn’t matter what a person thinks. People say a lot of crazy things.”
Except I’m pretty sure Antoine Dodson’s aunties and uncles don’t donate millions of dollars a year to organizations that seek to deny him his basic human rights.
When hit with a barrage of criticism for this stance, the seasoned political commentator posted a second video titled “y’all made me pull my hair back lol!” essentially doubling down on his position:
There’s certainly an argument to be made that Chik-Fil-A is going to make a ton of money and donate a ton of it to anti-gay causes whether Antoine Dodson eats there or not, so he might as well partake of their delicious chikn, but that’s not what he’s saying here. He starts out by addressing the issue of gay rights by saying he is allowed to “go anywhere in this country” and “buy a house or a car,” which to him translates to all the rights he needs. He also doesn’t seem to fully grasp the gay marriage issue, saying, “If I wanna get married in the US, there are plenty of states I can get married in. It don’t have to be the one I’m livin’ in, I like to travel.” (IF DAN CATHY HAD HIS WAY, YOU WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO THAT EITHER, DUDE.) He also says he will continue to patronize Chik-Fil-A to show support for the people who work there, which, considering Chik-Fil-A’s prominent position in today’s union busting, minimum wage, service economy, is sort of like saying you’ll keep eating meat to support the animals, but whatever.
It’s easy to laugh at this ridiculous man and point out the ways in which he is wrong, but it does bring up an interesting question: is “marriage equality” a bourgeois goal that has little effect on the lives of people living at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder? Probably. Is it still a worthy goal? Yes! But more so than anything, a lot of people no longer feel comfortable giving their money to this asshole knowing he’s just going to turn around and give it to the wrong side. Guess I’m not going to take my responsible consumerism cues from the “Bed Intruder” guy anymore.
