It’s so easy to get jaded and cynical when you’re covering celebrity news on a daily basis.
That’s why seeing the trailer for a moving documentary like Drag Dad makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. The documentary follows around the drag queen superstar Tyra Sanchez (James William Ross) as he attempts to balance out his two roles as a drag queen and as a parent. After winning RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2010, he rocketed to fame and got a chance to make this documentary about what life is like for him and as his son.
And contrary to what most people in this country probably (unfortunately) believe, life looks pretty normal for James, Tyra and little Jeremiah. Which is exactly why this documentary needs to be seen. For all the rumors and insinuations about what growing up in an LGBT home does to a child, this documentary shows that kids still turn out well-adjusted when they’re raised by loving parents.
Most Americans today still believe children should be raised by a man and a woman. As filmmakers, we feel a need to break down the idea that some parents are somehow better than others because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We think it’s important to show those who hold prejudices against LGBT families that these things do not define what makes a good parent. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re gay, straight, a Wall Street broker or drag performer. Love and dedication to your child defies all labels. We’ve seen James and Jeremiah together, and the sweet nature of their relationship. We want to bring that relationship to the screen.
So it’s not only fun to watch, but also necessary to see. The only thing stopping America from getting an opportunity to see it is money. They’re raising funds via Kickstarter and need your help to turn this dream into a reality. Do something good and donate today!
