I’ve always thought of Dane Cook‘s comedy act as the place laughter goes to die, and his terrible joke about the Aurora shooting only serves to make me more sure of this fact.
Last night at The Laugh Factory in Hollywood, the inexplicably successful comedian decided to break out some new material about a recent news event. Topical! The only problem was, that recent event was the tragic murder of twelve people in a movie theater, so the joke didn’t go over as well as he’d hoped:
“So I heard that the guy came into the theater about 25 minutes into the movie. And I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie, but the movie is pretty much a piece of crap. Yea, spoiler alert. I know that if none of that would have happened, pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like ‘ugh fucking shoot me.”
The audience responded with a mixture of boos and laughs, and remember, these are Dane Cook fans. They tend to like every shitty joke that comes out of this guy’s mouth.
In addition to jumping on this tragedy way too soon (some of the victims haven’t even had funerals yet), the joke was fairly terrible. First, I think most critics agree that The Dark Knight Rises was not, in fact, crap, so he fails on that front. Second, “fucking shoot me”? Really?? That might be the most obvious and clichéed groaner I’ve ever heard. Like a dad joke, if your dad was horribly insensitive towards victims of a recent tragedy. And I get it that he was trying to “go dark,” but I question whether that ability lies within Mr. Cook’s range as a comic. At least if he sticks to his usual frat boy humor about being a dude or whatever, he’ll only be offensive in his regular way and not in a “definitely going to Hell, and not even for anything good” way.
And what the fuck is wrong with the audiences at the Laugh Factory? First they laughed at Daniel Tosh’s rape “joke,” and now this. They are not the enlightened processors of entertainment I once believed them to be.
