When we first saw that Alana “Honey Boo Boo Child” Thompson (of Toddlers and Tiaras fame) was getting her own reality show on TLC, we predicted it was going to be grade A train wreck entertainment: all the charming creepiness of her Toddlers and Tiaras appearance, but with none of Eden Wood(‘s mother’s) blatant desperation, and with a spicy dash of the Southern gothic thrown in. And from the looks of the first promo, we were right!
Titled Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (I guess the “child” part made it too long?) the show follows not just the pint-sized pageant queen, but her whole family as they participate in mud sports, pat their bellies, and scratch at the bugs that live in their scalps. There’s even a bit of disagreement among the family members as to whether or not they are “red necks;” perhaps in an effort to rebel against their roots, her older sisters retort, “we all have our teeth, don’t we?” (DO YA?)
Honey Boo Boo is as vivacious as ever, if slightly less spastic. Which is a good thing, as her “go-go juice” segment made her resemble a child possessed. The show should give viewers a nice, trashy look into how she got this way, but I hope they answer the most pressing question of all: how did her speech come to resemble a weird combination of childhood babble, drunken slurring, and sassy “ghetto” stereotype? It really is something else.
