Early this morning, Kerry Washington – looking lovely and composed — and Jimmy Kimmel – roused out of bed in his flannel jammies because Nick Offerman couldn’t make it across the country thanks to last night’s storm — announced the Emmy nominations 2012. And while a lot of the usual suspects like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire got honored, we’re most excited about the folks who are nominees for the first time!
Does it surprise you at all that Girls snagged a couple of noms? For the record, we’re incredibly excited, and we were worried that the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences would be turned off by the graphic sex scenes and Millennial-centric plotting. But no, now the HBO series will be going toe-to-toe with mainstays like 30 Rock, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, and Curb Your Enthusiasm, as well as fellow first-timer Veep. Out of the foursome, only Lena Dunham got nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series; personally, we would’ve liked to see Allison Williams get a Supporting nod, but that’s OK.
And how about Benedict Cumberbatch?! The rising geek star, who’s finally getting his due after a decade in the biz, got recognized for his series Sherlock, which is also one of the nominees for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie. Sadly, I’ve seen only the pilot (I know!), but it’s such a dynamic show and his performance is just incredible. He so deserves this.
OK, Louis C.K. isn’t technically a newbie; this is his second time being nominated for Lead Actor. Unfortunately, his show didn’t make it into the running for Outstanding Comedy Series this year. Still, I think it’s safe to say that last year not a lot of people knew who he was, so now — thanks to his Reddit AMA and the recent Tosh.0 controversy — more people can appreciate this honor for him.
And then, on the other end of the spectrum, you had the very puzzling news of Nicole Kidman snagging a nomination for the miniseries that no one watched, Hemingway & Gellhorn. It’s a biopic starring Clive Owen, who also got honored, and apparently it was good? If enough people put it on their ballots. I’m still steamed that neither Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) nor Rob Lowe (Drew Peterson: Untouchable) got recognized!
