Everyone (this blog included) has been freaking out today over 13-year-old singing sensation Madison Beer, who popular mythology would have you believe was discovered out of nowhere by a sharp-eyed Justin Bieber as he wiled away the hours browsing Youtube for people who remind him of himself. Well, guess what? I didn’t go down quite like that. Or like that at all, really. (Shocking, I know.)
According to several sources, Madison Beer is not some random person Bieber plucked from obscurity yesterday. She’s already been in talks with Scooter Braun, the same talent manager who discovered Bieber on Youtube, for an unspecified amount of time. As with his other “protege” Carly Rae Jepsen, Bieber most likely found out about her from Braun, then tweeted her up, either because Braun asked him to or because he was just really excited. But probably because he asked him to.
Braun’s no fool, and it’s obvious Justin Bieber’s massive following on twitter (and everywhere else) has the power to anoint a new star singlehandedly. We’ve seen it before with the way Bieber helped Carly Rae Jepsen, who was already signed to Braun’s label at the time, first by appearing in her video, then by spreading the word. Bieber owes him a favor or two, so he’s probably happy to do it. That said, I don’t doubt that he genuinely likes Madison Beer, or that Madison Beer is genuinely excited to be liked by him. It just didn’t happen quite like everyone thinks it did.
