Interview: Cimorelli Are Giving the Jonas Brothers a Run for Their Money

If you’ve been on YouTube lately, then you know Cimorelli – the six singing sisters are everywhere you look. And they stand out among the millions of Glee hopefuls for a reason. The Cimorelli girls know their harmonies, and they know their audience. Just like the Biebers before them, these ladies are taking the internet by storm and turning all those YouTube views into a serious career.

The sisters of Cimorelli – Christina (21), Katherine (19), Lisa (18), Amy (17), Lauren (13), and Dani (12) – made themselves YouTube stars with their cover of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.” They struck gold when they posted the video right after Miley debuted the song at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards. Three years later, they’re heading to the Teen Choice Awards themselves, with a nomination for Choice Web Star.

Since their “Party in the USA” video, Cimorelli’s offerings have become more polished and choreographed, but their signature harmonies are still front and center. The Cimorelli girls grew up with music, learning piano and voice from their mother. In addition to their YouTube covers, they write their own songs, and edit their own videos. At the moment, they’re finishing up their debut album.

So, with their wholesome, family band image (and purity rings), are Cimorelli the next Jonas Brothers? Maybe, in terms of popularity. But these ladies have got their own thing going on, and we had the chance to hear about it straight from the source. Check out our interview with Cimorelli below.

Crushable: I know you all grew up with music, but how did the band come about? When did you decide to turn your hobby into a career?

Christina: I decided I wanted to do this when I was fifteen. And then we had all sung together a lot, so it was pretty much just a natural progression for all of us to be in a band together and make it into a career. We all love music, it’s our passion. So to be able to do what we love for a living is a dream come true.

How do you think things would be different for you without platforms like YouTube and social media sites?

Lisa: I think we definitely would not be where we are today without the internet. We are definitely an internet-formed band, we love Twitter, and Facebook, and Instagram, and YouTube. And we got our start on YouTube, so we’re so grateful that the music industry and the YouTube industry is kind of evolving toward this online thing, where it’s more do-it-yourself and forge your own path. You don’t have to just start out with a label or whatever, and never have control over anything. We were able to make a lot of decisions and build our own brand through the internet, as opposed to having someone else do it.

How do you choose songs to cover for your YouTube videos?

Katherine: We kind of look at what we like, and also what’s current and what’s out there. A lot of times we’ll look at top ten songs on iTunes and see if there’s anything we like. Or if we want to reach a new audience then maybe we’ll cover something that’s a little bit different of a genre, like a country or more hip hop song. So it’s all about reaching new people and also doing songs that we love.

Minus the purity ring parts, I thought they seemed like awesome girls. I just get a little nervous when people start publicly talk about saving themselves because it adds a lot of pressure to fame.
