How many of you hoodie-wearing, indie rock loving young adults out there used to be Goths in high school? It’s okay, this is a safe space. Show of hands? Ah yes, it’s just as I thought. Nerds! Just kidding, I used to be one, too.
Transitioning out of teenage Gothdom is a perfectly natural part of the circle of life, but some of us are on longer schedules than others. Case in point: Tim Burton muse Johnny Depp, who, at age 49, has finally decided to trade in his guyliner and steampunk glasses for the twee, retro, Instagram-y world of Wes Anderson.
At least, that’s the narrative I’ve constructed in my head to feel like I have something in common with Johnny Depp. Depp has reportedly signed on to star in The Grand Budapest Hotel, a new project by indie darling Wes Anderson. Not much else is known about the film yet, but Anderson is said to be courting his usual standbys like Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and Edward Norton, as well as Jude Law, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe and Angela Lansbury. Whoa.
When reached for comment, Tim Burton said “Johnny who?” and stormed off to his bat cave to cry eccentrically into his insect-meat pie. At least he’s still got Helena Bonham Carter.
