Nyan Cat, I would expect. In fact, there's an adorable photo somewhere in the gallery of a little girl with her parents holding her rainbow train. But a sexed-up version of our favorite endless internet meme? Just feels too weird.

AWESOM-O from South Park

South Park's "AWESOM-O" episode, in which Cartman disguised himself as a shoddy cardboard robot to blackmail Butters but then ended up becoming his best friend, aired in 2004. You'd think if someone were going for relevance they'd choose the Human CentiPad from 2011. Big ups to the fan who went for a mid-series character.

Consuela from Family Guy

Today I learned that the random Latina maid from Family Guy has a name: Consuela! And she's popped into multiple episodes, from "Mr. Superman no here" to overstaying her welcome with the Griffins. Now that I've done a quick "Best of Consuela" retrospective on YouTube, I have to say she's kind of a badass character, what with always saying, "Nooo. Nooo." You learn something new every day!

The Google Logo

OK, so the costume itself is geeky. But the motivation is entirely unexpected: Two guys go around with shirts that form the bookends of the Google logo, then pose with ladies whose breasts make up the missing Os. It's kind of genius and kind of offensive, all at the same time.

Mary Poppins

Talk about random! I know that Mary Poppins is an old-school BAMF, and New York City is still obsessed with her considering that I shove past crowds at the Mary Poppins Broadway show on my way to press screenings. But what I'm curious about is, why bring her out in 2012?

Non-Geeky Darth Vader and Boba Fett

Well, that's one way to stand out and save money on your costume: Just put the iconic helmets on top of what looks like some pretty pimpin' suits.

I'm torn on this one—it's a throwback to a certain generation, but is really something that all Millennials grew up with, not just the geeky ones. So I'm going to count it under "mainstream."

Haha! You have two of my costumes up on this….preggo Snooki and Consuela from Family Guy. It really is no fun being what everyone else is at con. So, that’s why I chose to do the most random costumes for my cosplay.

I think that perhaps from a geek perspective, some of those costumes you mentioned do seem “mainstream” but I think it is strange to say that Star Wars costumes are acceptable (I don’t think there is a more mainstream sci-fi franchise out there – there’s a even a ride at Disneyland for chrissakes) when other obscure (but perhaps less appealing to a certain facet of geek culture) characters are portrayed. I can’t think of a single person I know who has not seen Star Wars, but I only know a handful of people who have even heard of Archer.

I think that ultimately what matters is that people come to Comic-Con to share in their obsession about whatever thing they love with other like-minded people, in a safe place where others won’t judge them for being freakishly obsessed with something that the rest of the world is only moderately interested in. (Although, I say good riddance to the celebrity autograph stalkers… and I suppose I agree that Snookie would have been more Comic-Con appropriate/creative had she been a Snookie-Wookie instead: http://goo.gl/Llue0)

Comic Con is now billed as a POP CULTURE event, so I think there is even a place for a Snooki costume there.
