When I first heard that James Franco would be playing a young Oz in the The Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful, I felt a tornado of excitement build up inside of me. Then when I heard Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle WIlliams would be playing the three witches, I grabbed my Aunt Dorothy (NYC euphemism for bath salts) and flew over the rainbow. Becaues that’s how wicked awesome this movie sounded to me.
And now, just as I fill out the HR paperwork to change my pen name to Elphaba the Misunderstood Witch, the trailer for the movie comes out — and it’s awesome. Not a lot happens in it, but it did get me super pysched for what’s sure to be a great blockbuster film. Plus, it doesn’t come out until March 8th, 2013, so there’s a lot of time for more informative trailers.
Here’s what we know so far. Oz is a young man looking for greatness in Kansas. Oz goes to some kind of circus/freak show. (Is this part of the movie or just a behind-the-scenes clip with James Franco? We won’t know until the movie comes out.) Oz gets caught in a tornado, ends up in Oz and has a few beWITCHing relationships. Â Who will he choose. Theodora, the Wicked Witch of the West (Mila Kunis), Evanora, The Wicked Witch of the East (Rachel Weisz) or Glinda the Good Witch (Michelle Williams)?
I predict none of them because he’s James Franco and he’ll surely end up marrying 6-10 munchkins, writing about it on The Huffington Post and then discussing it in a Yale lecture hall before the end of the movie. But like I said, we’ll have to wait until March to find out.
