Hunger Games fans have long predicted this, but it’s nice to have it finally confirmed: Following in the footsteps of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Lionsgate is splitting the final book, Mockingjay, into two movies to be released a year apart. Here are your official titles and dates to mark on your Google calendars:
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 comes out November 21, 2014
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 comes out November 20, 2015
November seems to be a good month for releasing epic conclusions to YA series; again, see about with Harry Potter and the Twilight movies. Also, I imagine that Lionsgate is banking on the most money coming from fans who are home for the Thanksgiving holiday and have the time to take in Mockingjay multiple times over the weekend. Seeing as that holiday is also known as the “turkey drop,” you’ll have a lot of heartbroken kids who’ll find solace in Katniss and the crew storming the Capitol.
Now, the question is where exactly they’ll split the books. (Spoilers, natch.) My guess is that Part 1 will deal with Katniss becoming the Mockingjay, the symbol of the rebellion, through propaganda films shot in District 13 and the surrounding area. The movie will probably end with Peeta’s rescue from the Capitol, where he’s been brainwashed into wanting to kill Katniss. Then Part 2 will focus solely on the aforementioned attack on the Capitol, with all of the heartbreaking deaths and the aftermath. Deathly Hallows did a similar deal, and while some people said that the first movie was kind of slow with mostly just Harry, Ron, and Hermione hiding out in the woods, combined with the second movie it did a really good job of heightening the tension before the big showdown at Hogwarts.
