Wow. Justin Bieber is in a bad mood—perhaps because he’s broken up with girlfriend of two years Selena Gomez? At any rate, the Biebs was in fine form in a recent interview with a Detroit radio station: He got all butt hurt that he was compared to one of the savviest boy-banders-turned-entertainers, completely missed a One Direction joke, and then made a “your mom” joke which went up in flames after it turned out the DJ’s mom had already passed away.
That’s a lot to get through. So, let’s start at the top. The DJ led with the usual fawning bullshit over Justin’s new album Boyfriend, but when he started to ad lib, that’s when things got bad. And it’s not like he was trying to get a rise out of the kid! All he said, very nicely I might add, was, “I hope you take this as a compliment because I really mean it as that. I thought it was Justin Timberlake, when I heard ‘Boyfriend’ the first time.” (That’s an honest mistake, though, since there’s that *NYSNC song “Would You Be My Girlfriend?” Also, yes, the high-pitched parts of the song sound just like solo-career JT.)
For some reason I cannot figure out, Justin got really pissy and shot back, “That’s crazy because our voices sound nothing alike. Saying I sound like someone else is not really a compliment.” Um, yes it is. Consider Emma Stone‘s wonderful acceptance speech when she received the MTV Trailblazer Award. Consider that Justin Timberlake has smoothly transitioned from embarrassing boy bander to uber-cool SNL regular.
Trying to save the interview, the DJ switched over to the recent story about the guy accusing One Direction’s Harry Styles of sleeping with his wife. You’d think an eighteen-year-old boy would love to riff on a subject like this, but Justin got really defensive when the DJ brought in Justin’s mom Pattie Mallette:
DJ: “Do you worry about Harry around your mom since he likes older women?”
Justin: “I think you should worry about me around your mom, bro.”
DJ: “Justin, my mom’s dead, so unfortunately that wouldn’t work.”
Then, because there was no way he could salvage this, Biebs hung up in a huff.
Justin and Selena do not have a good relationship with radio hosts. Last year, after Kidd Kraddick made a crack about Selena’s mom covering up for Selena getting pregnant. Selena tweeted an angry response (though she later deleted it), and then her fans jumped on the bandwagon and suddenly there was a rumor that Kidd had made a miscarriage joke. What I don’t understand is how Justin and Selena consistently get their wires crossed over the radio. It’s not like this happened over Twitter or some social media platform where you can’t trace the quote back to a source.
What’s weird is, the DJ made the joke about Harry because his assistant had found a recent interview with Selena where she said something to the effect of, “Justin jokes that we should keep our moms away from Harry!” But maybe this is part of Justin’s new Boyfriend image: Sullen teenager.
