The cover art for J.K. Rowling’s new book, “The Casual Vacancy” has just been released and unfortunately, it doesn’t feature a certain lightning bolt scar and pair of bi-focals. Meaning she wasn’t kidding about writing a book that has absolutely nothing to do with the Harry Potter series. I was secretly hoping that Rowling was conducting the greatest practical joke of all time, as I’m sure most Potterheads were.
While we’re used to seeing lively cover art for Rowling’s books, this new one doesn’t really show anything. It’s red and yellow with a box and an X. It kind of looks like it could be an old McDonald’s advertisement. Something like, “The Big Mac checks ‘yes’ in your heart,” Wow. Good thing I wasn’t an advertising major.
Even though this book doesn’t center around our favorite magical friends, I’m sure the writing alone is magical. And if you think magical is the work of Stephanie Meyer then just go ahead and t-bone me with your car. Read J.K. Rowling’s grocery list would change your life. If she wrote my name on a piece of paper, I would instantly become famous. If she wrote fortune cookie fortunes, they would come true. Woman is a writing wizard. So to say I’m excited about this book would be an understatement, whether it involved Harry Potter or not.
Here is the official book synopsis from the Little Brown Book Group:
“When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations? A big novel about a small town, “The Casual Vacancy” is J. K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.”
Small British town? War? Sounds like the war between Dumbledore and Grindelwald! Is that a stretch? Sigh.
Whatever, we know this book is going to be good. The cover makes more sense after you read the synopsis too since it focuses on an election. And there is a checked box. Like on a ballot. Get it?!
So what do you guys think? Are you excited for this new book? Will you read it just because J.K. Rowling wrote it or do you want more HP?
