In the past few days, we’ve heard the list of emotional crimes committed against Katie Holmes by her soon-to-be-ex-husband Tom Cruise. But this latest rumor is inexcusable. Casting Katie as his wife and having Scientologists track her every move pale in comparison to this: Tom didn’t let her do a Dawson’s Creek reunion.
Can you believe it? Yes, actually, considering the iron control he held over her personal life, steering this vibrant young woman with the distinctive smile out of the spotlight and into one of his many Scientology mansions, allowed only to emerge when she had their prized heir Suri perched on her hip. But the point of my rhetorical question is that we all love Dawson’s Creek, we grew up with these impossibly self-aware teenagers, and for Tom to deny Katie the chance to reunite with the actors that she grew up with.
According to Us Weekly‘s source, several years after Dawson’s wrapped in 2003, the producers were trying to get the cast back together for a movie. (Whether it was a TV movie or silver screen isn’t clear.) ”[Producers] were begging her to sign on for a reunion movie,” the source said. “Tom said absolutely no way and thought going backward would be bad. [But Katie] didn’t care how ‘low-brow’ he thinks Dawson’s Creek is. She wanted to do the movie and reconnect with her fans. And have fun—something she rarely does anymore.”
Obviously that never came to pass: Katie had her lifeforce slowly sucked out by little, heels-wearing, Starbucks-clutching Suri; James Van Der Beek made a career out of playing himself; Michelle Williams got Oscar-nominated; and no one is sure what Joshua Jackson is up to. I just can’t believe that Tom Cruise could stop his wife from participating in what he considered a low-brow teen soap when he just starred in Rock of Ages! Sure, he was the best part of the movie, but the project was ill-advised, sloppy, unexciting crap. Tom succeeded as Stacee Jaxx because the level of rock-star parody was unexpected. Why not let Katie inhabit a beloved, recognizable character? It’s not as if she were taking on any high-brow film roles in the meantime.
Now that Katie’s single, however, maybe she’ll be able to join the others back in Capeside. Michelle and James are totally game, with him saying, “I mean, if somebody came up with a brilliant idea how to do it, why not?” As recently as November 2011, Katie fondly reminisced on the show, saying, “I had so much fun” and making it clear that she’d be down for a reunion. Of course, I don’t know what they’d do plotwise since Jen died in the finale and Joey finally chose Pacey over Dawson… But since it’s a meta show and it concluded long before social media or even just Facebook, I bet that Kevin Williamson could find some commentary to make about internet memes and such.
