If you missed out on the hilariously quirky first season of MTV’s high school dramedy Awkward, Â we’d like to offer you a quick catch-up. It’s one of our favorite shows and we promise you that it’s worth watching — whether or not you’re still in high school. And, since it premieres tonight at 10:30 p.m./9:30c, you better get up to speed fast.
Like every other teenager in America, Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards) is a 15-year old struggling to fit in at high school. Season 1 kicked off with her receiving a nasty “carefrontation” letter that leads to a misunderstanding that she tried to commit suicide. Which is so not the case. Despite being an outcast, Jenna’s optimistic, eccentric and cool. A regular high school Juno who you can’t help but root for and love.
After embracing the whole “not a suicide suicide” thing with humor and charm, Jenna emerges from her isolation at school, finds some friends and even starts dating. She loses her virginity to insecure popular football player Matty (Beau Mirchoff), but he doesn’t want to make their relationship public. Later in the season, Jenna starts a relationship with outgoing nice guy class president Jake (Brett Davern), meaning much of season 2 will revolve around the love triangle Jenna now finds herself in.
If I’m being honest, Beau Mirchoff as Matty is simply too hot not to root for him, and I’m not just saying that because I prefer brunettes in general. In the trailer, it does kind of seem like Matty eventually gets a leg up on Jake…(Yay Matty!)
As you can see, things don’t seem to be getting any less awkward this season. And I for one couldn’t be happier about it. (Even though seeing poor Matty sit there as Jenna and Jake are mackin’ it does make me shift around in my seat a little bit.) Other plot lines to look forward to this season include Jenna’s rocky relationship with her mother, a plastic-surgery-obsessed imbecile, who we learned in the season 1 finale probably wrote the “carefrontation” letter that set all of Jenna’s drama into motion.
Oh, there’s also Jenna’s arch nemesis Sadie (Molly Tarlov), an atypical “popular girl” with a “fat gene” and a crush on Matty. Yep, it’s going to get awkward.
Tune in for it all when Awkward premieres tonight, June 28 at 10:30/9:30c on MTV. Then prepare yourself for an awesome season because the show’s going to be debuting 12 all-new episodes this summer and we’re gearing up for all the cringe-worthy, awkward drama that’s sure to ensue.
