Novelist Bret Easton Ellis is already acting like he’s gotten the job of adapting E.L. James‘ BDSM bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey for the big screen, as the last few days have seen him tweeting out his various dream teams for directors and actors. To be fair, Ellis is the only writer who’s really come forward with such enthusiasm; he maintains that he’s not trolling at all and thinks that Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele are “potentially great cinematic characters.” Now, even though BEE is known for the explicitly dark books The Rules of Attraction and American Psycho, it’s only now that he’s writing his first screenplay, for the bizarre project The Canyons starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. Still, you have to imagine that his very vocal Twitter support could go a long way toward getting him the gig.
You know who else really wants to be part of this movie? Ian Somerhalder. We’ve watched the Vampire Diaries star go from cautiously interested in playing Christian Grey (when Ryan Seacrest first brought up the possibility) to actively pushing himself for the role of the billionaire with a need to dominate beautiful young women. In 2002, Ian starred in The Rules of Attraction, based on BEE’s novel, but it’s unclear if the two ever directly worked together since Paul Avary wrote the screenplay. You also get the sense that Ellis is teasing Ian a bit over Twitter, as he rambled a bit over Twitter on June 12th about other candidates:
Regarding Christian in Fifty Shades of Grey I know everyone seems to like Ian Somerhalder but has anyone noticed Logan Marshall-Green?…
Rereading “Fifty Shades of Grey: it’s hard for me to think of Ian Somerhalder as Christian G. because I’ve known him personally for so long.
Okay, okay: I’m seeing Christian G. in Fifty Shades of Grey as Ian Somerhalder but Paul Denton in The Rules of Attraction keeps haunting me.
I know Ian Somerhalder and how kinky he can be and yes, he’s probably Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, and he will go all-out for it.
I want Alex Pettyfer for Christian Grey but I know he’ll never do it.
Somewhere in there, Ian butted in to express his interest and reassure BEE that he’s grown up a lot from the vulnerable gay character he played in Rules:
@BretEastonEllis -Id so love to be ChristianGrey w/you&Angelina Jolie. Ive only waited 10 years to do a movie w/u.Im grown up now-no worries
Isn’t that sweet? It’s wonderful to see an actor really fight for a role he wants. Of course, Angelina Jolie is no longer a contender for director, which is too bad because her combined with Ellis’ dark take on sex and Ian’s older, kinkier persona would make for a pretty unbridled film. At any rate, it seems that Ellis has relented, as his most recent tweet on casting would suggest:
I’ll call Ian tomorrow for “Fifty Shades of Grey”…I get it, I get it…
Again, take all this with a huge grain of salt since it’s not like the studio has hired BEE. But I can get behind this team.
