If Justin Bieber Insists On Stealing The Backstreet Boys’ Song Title ‘As Long As You Love Me,’ Then We’re Gonna Compare Them

Justin Bieber "As Long As You Love Me" compare Backstreet Boys

Last night, Justin Bieber released the latest single off his upcoming album Believe: A dubsteppy song called “As Long As You Love Me.” If your mind immediately went to the Backstreet Boys dancing in an auto garage for a bunch of women and shapeshifting into each other, congratulations, you’re a normal person. Because, you know, BSB already released a song of the same name… back in 1997, when Justin was only three years old.

Really, why the Biebs would choose to title one of his songs after a beloved boy band hit is beyond me. But he’s thrown down the gauntlet, and we have no choice but to respond the only way we know how: Throwing up Bieber’s “club-banger” soon-to-be-hit against BSB’s heartfelt ’90s ballad.

Beat/Melody: We knew, when Justin released the first snippets of his Believe tracks, that he was going for several different styles on this album. And I don’t know if it’s his voice or the beat, but the lyrics come out sounding more whiny when set to dubstep. Sure, I’m nodding my head, but otherwise all of these clashing elements make the song grate after a few listens. And I’m someone who will play “Somebody To Love” on repeat! Then you have BSB’s version, which music snobs would likely describe as horribly simple, and yet it’s smooth like butter. Also, those guitar riffs in the beginning will always be associated with this song for me.

Lyrics: Shit’s getting real for Bieber, as he sings about fame and trying to make everyone happy.

I’m under pressure,
Seven billion people in the world trying to fit in
Keep it together,
Smile on your face even though your heart is frowning
But hey now, you know girl,
We both know it’s a cruel world
But I will take my chances

Rapper Big Sean – he of the Nicki Minaj gem “Dance (A$$)” – helpfully adds,

You, you the one that I argue with, I feel like I need a new girl to be bothered,
But the grass ain’t always greener on the other side,
It’s green where you water it

OK, that’s actually deep. Growing up in the ’90s, I was more of a BSB fan than *NSYNC, though I acknowledged that Justin Timberlake and co. were better dancers. Still, I always regarded the Backstreet Boys’ lyrics as more poetic than their peers or successors.

Although loneliness has always been a friend of mine
I’m leavin’ my life in your hands
People say I’m crazy and that I am blind
Risking it all in a glance
And how you got me blind is still a mystery
I can’t get you out of my head
Don’t care what is written in your history
As long as you’re here with me

Message: For this, we have to go to the choruses. In typical Millennial fashion, Justin’s lyrics imagine the worst-case scenario…

As long as you love me
We could be starving, we could be homeless, we could be broke
As long as you love me
I’ll be your platinum, I’ll be your silver, I’ll be your gold

By contrast, BSB keeps it simple:

I don’t care who you are
Where you’re from
What you did
As long as you love me

I feel like Justin’s song is about conditional love—as long as you fulfill my requests, girl, I’ll do the tough job of taking care of you. Whereas BSB was always pleading with the phantom girls to accept them as they are, because their love is so worth it, baby.

I’m not going to pretend like this was ever any kind of competition; of course I’m always going to be loyal to the Backstreet Boys. Bieber could have chosen a different title — “I’ll Be Your Platinum,” anyone? — but it’s OK, because BSB themselves know that they’re the best, as exemplified by this tweet they posted yesterday:

Backstreet Boys #aslongasyouloveme tweet Justin Bieber

But I am fully prepared for Belieber backlash, so please feel free to defend this new “As Long As You Love Me” in the comments.

Waah waaah, outrage outrage outrage! Where are my sisters from the Bieber fan club?! Diiiee Natalie Zutter DIE! Bieber is the voice of the millennium and has done things nobody else does! Let me write many articles defending him on this site!

    • Natalie Zutter

Cee, please tell me you’re poking fun at all the crazy fans who have wished death threats on Jenni and me. Because if you are… you’re brilliant.

    • Cee

Tee hee, could not resist! What a parade of crazy that was! I got accused of harassment for merely pointing out that those boys have not contributed anything new to the musical world and stating that all boy bands seem to have quick expiration date with one waiting to replace it. I learned of a scary type of crazy that day…

And bieber reached the top of iTunes???? BSB sold 130,000,000 albums!!!!

Ok. Right off the bat, I’m a 90′s kid and massive BSB fan, so I’m not going to beat around the bush and make you think like I might entertain the idea of liking Justin’s song. I don’t. Stuttering as Justin does in the hook of the song is not a valid lyric.

I think he just used that title to bring about these very kind of discussions and have more people (BSB fans) listen to his song. But it works both ways and now you will have kids who were too young to hear BSB’s As Long As You Love Me listen to it. So because of this, I have to thank Justin.

    Sliver lining people, sliver lining.

So true!! That should be an initiative in schools–make sure kids are properly educated on ’90s music.

…. Ok, I was never into BSB. But that Bieber song is *godawful* !

  • Lisa R

This is the first Bieber song I’ve listened to… It has the club dubstep, but isn’t fast enough for the club. It has the lovesick vibe, but is too clubby to do it right. Ugh.

The BSB song, on the other hand… I have a soft spot for it, child of the ’90s that I am, but the speaker literally doesn’t care *who* the girl is, he just wants somebody to love him. That’s kind of pathetic and demeaning. Or maybe I’m just cynical. ;)

    • Natalie Zutter

Hmm, that’s a perspective I hadn’t considered, that they’re just casting out a net for whichever eligible girls are interested.
