In the weeks leading up to the release of Titanic 3D (which was a ton of fun), Kate Winslet shocked us by candidly declaring that hearing the iconic ballad “My Heart Will Go On” makes her feel “like throwing up.” Two months later, poor Celine Dion finally got to give a response! The Today show interviewed her about her life in general, and of course conversation turned to Kate’s dis. I always knew in the back of my head that Celine had a sense of humor, but her response was just perfect:
“‘My Heart Will Go On’ gave me the opportunity to be associated with a classic that will live forever. If I just count how many times I’ve sung it, maybe it’ll get me sick. If she feels tired just hearing it, and, like, throwing up, I’m glad she was not the one singing it!”
It’s definitely a weird spat that’s become uncomfortably public, partly because we regard both of these ladies as normally being so graceful. But Kate’s goal in the Titanic press tour seemed to be to take things just beyond the point of funny, like when she joked that she’s now the skinny one while the formerly slim Leonardo DiCaprio has bulked up.
Perhaps because Kate has received four Oscar nominations — and a win, for 2008′s The Reader – since she made Titanic, she feels that she’s allowed to mock the movie that made her a star. Whereas Celine, despite her marriage to an older guy and ongoing Vegas tour, will always be known as the woman who crooned “My Heart Will Go On” over Titanic‘s closing credits. But as Vulture points out, just look at poor Celine’s face around 3:48 in the video before. She takes that shit seriously.
