The Daily WTF: Sister Wives Star Proves That According To The Law, Bigamy Is Only A Crime If You Also Commit Another Crime At The Same Time

Until recently, Kody Brown of Sister Wives and his four wives — Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn — were being pursued by the Utah courts for violating bigamy laws…you know, since Kody is married to all four of them at the same time, and that’s supposedly illegal. However, the case against the Browns has apparently been dropped because the county now has the same policy toward bigamy that the state did: “they do not pursue criminal charges for consenting adult polygamists unless they’re committing other crimes.” Oh, okay, so it’s not a crime if both people are okay with it? WTF? Challenge. If that’s true, then why isn’t gay marriage allowed?

And regardless — what?? Polygamy is illegal! I know it is! It’s written down in lots of places! That’s like not arresting people for public nudity unless they’re also shoplifting at the same time. Or not getting someone in trouble for growing marijuana unless they also got popped for public urination. (Because polygamy and public urination are basically synonymous — they’re both essentially ‘peeing on the law’.) It makes no sense.

I’m all for keeping trashy reality television on the air, but not at the cost of Utah’s laws. They have so few already.

im curious, does it bother you because you’re against polygamy or because it’s the principal of breaking the law?

I think it’s a little bit of both.

The only thing that bothers me at all about the whole thing is that somehow this argument isn’t allowed for gay marriage. If both parties are fine with it…what’s the harm? Seems logical for both concepts! Yet somehow gay marriage still isn’t legal.

Why should it be illegal in the first place, if all parties are consenting and happy with the situation?

If I’m not mistaken he has also said repeatedly that only his marriage to his first wife is legal…the others are spiritual unions. So if he’s legally only married to one person, there is no crime.

I was going to say the same thing. The best part is that his other “wives” are technically considered single mothers and so can cash in on all the benefits of that.
