Can you believe that it’s been ten years since The Devil Wears Prada was published? Author Lauren Weisberger can, because just in time for the decade anniversary of her Vogue-slamming roman à clef, she’s writing a sequel. Yep, in April 2013 you can buy Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, which sees our heroine Andrea Sachs reunited with her horrid boss Miranda Priestly.
Eight years after Andy said, “Fuck you, Miranda” in Paris and consequently got fired from Runway magazine, she’s the editor of The Plunge – the hottest bridal magazine, natch — alongside her former rival Emily. Never mind that she had grand motivations of working for The New Yorker; apparently bridal magazines are good enough for her, especially since she’s planning her own nuptials to “a handsome media scion” named Max. Somehow it takes nearly a decade for Andy to cross paths with Miranda again, but when it happens… well, there’s no word yet on their confrontation, but I’m sure Miranda will have stored up plenty of snide asides and semi-abusive mind games.
Perhaps because of the nature of the first book, we have to be cynical about Weisberger’s motivations for penning a sequel. Her three follow-up novels (about PR, socialites and marriage, and the music biz) tanked; ironically, EW, who broke the news of this new book, called her novel Chasing Harry Winston the “#1 Worst Book of 2008.” It makes perfect sense that Weisberger would capitalize on her characters who have a clear following, especially since the movie rights will probably get snatched up soon. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if it took a hell of a lot of negotiations to get Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep back. (But most importantly, can they bring back Stanley Tucci as fashion director Nigel, please?)
Here’s the most puzzling aspect about this, which we were discussing in the Crushable office: While it was speculated that The Devil Wears Prada was about Weisberger’s time working under Anna Wintour at Vogue, the sequel will necessarily have to be fiction. I joked in the title of this post about “lies,” but really, Weisberger will have to be entirely making up Miranda’s new abuse of Andy. Judging from the title, I wonder if she’s even trying to suck up to Wintour a little bit.
Sorry! This poll is now closed.
