Everyone’s passing around this video of two sisters singing Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend.” There’s no doubt that 12-year-old Lennon and 8-year-old Maisy can sing. And yes it’s pretty cool that they’ve pulled off Erato’s empty container drumming version of the song.
But in this day and age where every two-year-old can jam out to pop music in their car seat, it’s not enough to impress me. Especially when this video’s so clearly not a spontaneous moment of talent that the parents happened to catch on camera.
It’s obviously a calculated recording that someone hoped would go viral. Hello microphones!
Back in the day, Charlie biting his brother’s finger was enough to entertain us. But unfortunately for all the parents out there who think their kid’s the next big thing, that’s just not the case anymore.
Thanks to Youtube, we know so many children have talent. Amazing talent. We also know they say ridiculous shit when they’re coming off anesthesia.
If you want to go viral in this day and age I need to see a lot more pizazz. I want costumes and set dressings and fireworks and Adele-like talent. I want to see infants playing John Mayer on the piano while making fruit salad. I need kindergartners driving a car through a house on fire while out Skrillex-ing Skrillex. I’d die to see a group of teenage girls sneak into the White House and perform Mr. Holland’s Opus in Obama’s bedroom…without waking Michelle.
That’s what deserves to go viral these days. CRAZY TALENT. Not like “this kid’s so talented, it’s crazy.” But “Man, these kids are talented, but they’re also crazy.”
