On Sunday night at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, Carly Rae Jepsen‘s management pulled a move we’re referring to as The Reverse Pop Star: they tried to make her look much younger than her age. Usually young female pop stars arrive on stage at awards shows wearing almost no clothing (See: Miley Cyrus) and generally trying to look a lot older than they are.
But Carly took the complete opposite approach.
Tonight was the first time Carly took the stage as a performer at a major American awards show. But rather than exposing lots of skin and gyrating all over the stage, she wore pants. And actually looked younger than her age.
It was definitely an approach that some people on Twitter responded well too.
Carly is HUGE with teenagers right now, but she’s actually 26 years old. Which many people were surprised to find out tonight.
Meanwhile, the fledgling pop star came in third in Canadian Idol back in 2008. But it wasn’t until Justin Bieber and his girlfriend Selena Gomez created a fan video of her new song “Call Me Maybe” with their friends that most Americans knew her name. Ever since that video hit YouTube in February, “Call Me Maybe” has been stuck in everyone’s head (it even hit #1 in iTunes).
Carly is an adorable young 20-something, who could easily pass for a teenager on her own. But tonight, she was wearing sparkly pants, a loose tanktop and white sneakers. And her choreography mostly involved jumping on stage during her song.
It definitely seemed like a concerted effort to keep Carly’s image squeaky clean and young. Did it work? Or was it a wasted opportunity to introduce Carly to a huge new audience that’s never watched Justin Bieber lipsync her song?
